Life was slipping away
I felt like my life was flowing away from me underneath my fingertips, one reel at a time.
I was paying for One Sec to scroll less. It helped, but I wasn't 100% happy with it. Sometimes I'd think about building my own screen time app, but then I'd dismiss the idea. Someone else already did it. Why bother?
The push I needed
Then I read Mel Robbins' book about doing the thing you want to do—even when someone else has already done something similar.
That was the push I needed. I started building ScrollBump.
Reality check
During development, I was convinced this would be a hit. The free tier of my app felt better than the paid tier of One Sec. This was going to be huge.
Then I published.
I searched for my app on the App Store and found it buried underneath hundreds of other screen time apps. The market was crowded. Nobody noticed.
1% better isn't enough
I realized something important: my app can't be just 1% better to succeed. It has to be much better for anyone to notice.
So I kept building. I added features that I actually wanted:
- Custom photos and color themes for app shields
- Screen time stats and plots
- Accountability partners to keep you honest
- Location-based rules so you can scroll on your commute
Still building
ScrollBump isn't done. I'm still using it every day, still finding friction, still making it better.
If you're tired of watching your life slip away one scroll at a time, give it a try. The free tier is generous. And if it doesn't work for you, at least you tried something.
